Performance management
How do I deal with my under performing staff?
For goodness sake! Either help them improve or get rid of them! Easier said than done? Not really,
Most issues surrounding disappointing performance are not tackled properly from the beginning. Staff are often unclear exactly what is expected of them and managers may be less than clear about what is needed.
Can you answer these 3 questions in relation to any of your current under performers?
- Are they absolutely clear what is expected of them?
- Do they know when they have to complete this by?
- Do they understand what will happen if they fail to achieve this?
There are some other key questions as well but, in essence, if you cannot answer the above clearly you probably do not have the proper systems of performance management in place.
You need :
- A process that allows you to formally review progress against stated goals
- A method of reviewing this with all staff
- Clear targets and objectives that fit with a shared business vision
"Last time we used your process - and we have used it on a number of occasions - we ended up hiring the best employee we have ever engaged"
