As American golfer Bubba Watson rolled in a 2 foot putt on Sunday night to win the US Masters visit web and put himself in the list of golf’s major winners he gave us all a powerful lesson.
Gerry Lester “Bubba” Watson, Jr is now at the top of his chosen field. He is major winner, a feat that has looked unlikely from him turning professional in 2003. He’s certainly a personality with frequent comparisons to Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandlers comic golfer creation. He has the same booming drive capable of hitting a ball almost 400 yards and a quirky style that has seen him and select group of his closest golfing buddies spoofing boyband videos as the ‘Golf Boys’.
Yet he isn’t always considered a contender for the major prizes. That may be down to his golf style in many ways. He is almost completely self taught, and certainly is almost unique in the world of professional golf that he isn’t surrounded by a entourage of coaches, sports psychologists and fitness and nutrition experts.
He has a golf swing that is entirely of his own design, looking so alien on a course of perfectly manufactured swings that you could be forgiven for thinking he’s just nipped out of the crowd for a cheeky shot and security will be along to sort him out shortly. Indeed as a youngster Bubba, on telling his dad that he fancied golfing and asking his dad for some advice was told to just go out and swing, do his own thing.
Experts will tell you that his style shouldn’t work; it’s never going to make a golf manual. But, he’s done it, he’s won a major championship and it’s all his own work.
One thing that Bubba has proved is that it doesn’t matter what your style is, or how unconventional your approach is. If you are prepared to work hard every day, commit to fulfilling your goals and strive to improve hour by hour and day by day you can reach your goal.
Bubba’s story is one of success through goal setting, hard work, dedication and no little skill. However that is delivered.
