Recruit like you mean it!

I find it astonishing that so many businesses ( the majority actually) still rely on the tragically outdated interview whilst still spouting the old cliché of ” People are our greatest asset.”
If that is true ( and it should be) why do so many of us still go down the route of holding badly planned and executed interviews ? The typical format is:
- Interview in a room with little about the company
- Interviewer interviews alone( so no opportunity to check another opinion)
- Interview lasts 45-90 minutes
- Interviewee gets one or two questions at the end
Statistically first or last in gets the job.
We make our minds up in less than a second and spend the rest of the time proving we are right to ourselves. We also get it wrong 56% of the time!
That’s pretty dreadful if you have stayed with me since the opening quote!
I will declare an interest here in that I have run an ” alternative” recruitment company for nearly 15 years , but any of us could do so much better if we just put in a bit more effort.
5 top tips:
- Always interview with a ” buddy”
- Set the questions ahead of time and treat all candidates the same
- Get some one to show candidates around the business
- If you are really interested in them see them socially somewhere before offering the job ( a café or pub)
- Never appoint from a field of one unless you know them
It isn’t everything but its a start!
